Biomedical Engagement Ring

Takayas Mizuno of Takayas & Co.

The Biomedical Engagement Ring combines sleek architectural elements with a handmade feel, inspired by the study of bio-mechanics and the beauty of the natural environment. Designed by Takayas Mizuno, this unique piece of jewelry showcases a compelling simplicity that is both futuristic and complex.

The Urban Minimalist Ring stands out with its eye-catching design, featuring a mirror image of architectural and nature-inspired elements. The use of negative space adds emphasis to the design, creating a balance between organic shapes and geometric structure. The addition of brilliant diamonds and colored stones further enhances the beauty of this minimalist design.

The realization of the Biomedical Engagement Ring involves a combination of modern technology and traditional craftsmanship. The ring is designed using Matrix CAD rendering and printed using a CPX Printing machine. The wax model is then cast in 18K gold using the lost wax casting method. Careful cleaning and polishing are required to showcase the intricate hollow parts inside the ring. Laser welding is used to complete the final phase of the ring, ensuring the utmost precision and attention to detail.

Technical specifications of the Biomedical Engagement Ring include 18K white and yellow gold, with measurements varying depending on the ring size. The ring features a combination of bright orange, blue, and yellow sapphires, as well as diamonds. The center stone is a 7mm round, surrounded by 52 accent stones in descending size order.

Designed by Takayas Mizuno in his Los Angeles Design Studio, the Biomedical Engagement Ring took several months to complete. The design process involved extensive research on architectural structures, minimalist nature designs, and bio-mechanical art. Overcoming the challenge of translating the computer model into a physical ring required careful consideration of the casting process to maintain the integrity of the unique structure and shape.

Photographed by Marta Bialy, the Biomedical Engagement Ring has received recognition for its outstanding design. It was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in the Jewelry, Eyewear, and Watch Design category in 2014. This prestigious award honors well-designed, practical, and innovative creations that meet professional and industrial requirements.
